Here are some of my favorite ab moves:
- Hanging knee raises (pull up position. Without swinging or using momentum, bring your knees up to hip height. If you can, curl them up and into your chest.)
- Crunches on a stability ball (with a weight if it’s too easy)
- Knee tucks on a stability ball (push up position, hands on floor, toes on ball…bring your knees to your chest, then slowly release back to plank position)
- Reverse crunches on a bench (hold the bench for stability either just behind or above your head. With your knees bent, or legs straight, lift your hips up and off the bench, being careful not to force the movement by using momentum. Release. You can even add a twist at the top to hit your obliques)
- Toe touch crunches (Lie on your back with your legs straight up. Touch your toes. You can alternate opposite hand, opposite foot to hit your obliques. You can also hold a dumbell between your feet and hold a dumbell in your hands if it’s too easy)
- Russian twist with medicine ball (Balance yourself on your tailbone with your knees bent and feet off the floor. With your light medicine ball (or just your fists), rotate left and right, touching the floor just an inch or so away from your hip)
Many of these make your body balance to hold a position, then incorporate a dynamic movement (such as a crunch or rotation) so it forces you to use your abs to stay centered as well as initiate and execute that crunch or rotation. Anything on that stability ball will build that core strength and challenge you in a way that regular crunches can’t! Get creative. Try floor exercises on a stability ball or a Bosu.
